Born
February 24 in Elkins WV, Steve Moore has built his entire
life around a childhood dream. After seeing Chuck Berry on
TV at age 5, Steve begged his parents to let him take
guitar lessons. One year later, he was playing all of his
favorite songs on guitar for his family. For the next
three years Steve continued to study guitar and banjo,
along with the piano. At age 9 the school band director
gave his class a music test and tried to talk Steve into
playing in the school band. Steve ignorantly said “horns
are dumb” and walked away. The director being
unsatisfied with this reply, called Steve’s parents the
next day, and told them their son had a wonderful sense of
pitch, and it would be a shame to waste it. Steve finally
gave in and joined the school band under the condition
that after six months of playing the trumpet he would be
permitted to switch to the drums. Six months later, he
would reprioritize his life forever!
Steve
performed in the usual school band programs and garage
bands though his teens. By high school he was playing
every weekend with the areas best bands. Steve soon became
restless with merely playing on the weekends and realized
that West Virginia was not exactly the music capital of
the world. In order to make a living playing music, he
would have to move.
For
the next six years, Steve moved around the North East
working in styles from progressive speed metal and punk,
to straight ahead rock and roll. Influenced by drummers
like Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, and Terry Bozzio, he
sharpened his skills at playing with drum loops, odd
meters, and polyrhythms. Steve began recording for
industry heavyweights such as Dofka (Black Dragon
Recording Artist), John Wagner, and Scott Bender (formerly
of Baton Rouge, John Norum, Paul Gilbert and Alice
Cooper). He also began touring with bands like Triple XXX.
The Pittsburgh based band had one album on Substitute
Records, was sponsored by Budweiser, and appeared with
such acts as Jackal and Motley Crue. Steve was recording
albums and playing with professional musicians, but was
still not making a living playing drums. To support
himself he would wash dishes and work in factories. A
recording engineer feeling sorry for Steve, let him sleep
on the studio floor for six months in return for his drum
tracks. Not exactly what he had in mind when he left West
Virginia, but it would have to suffice until he could get
a road gig. In
1997, Rick K and The Allnighters (a variety showband),
offered Steve a full time position. The band toured coast
to coast with full production, including road crew and
tour bus. This position had Steve playing everything from
50’s and 60’s, to country and pop. He was now
listening to drummers like Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and
Steve Gadd. This was a entirely new circuit for Steve, but
he was eager to grow and expand his musical horizons.
There was no room for showboating. He quickly learned
about finesse and stage volume, as well as the business
of music. Steve was finally touring the country, and
making a living as a professional musician.
As
well as being an extremely proficient drummer, Steve
prides himself on his marketability and versatility. Upon
seeing Steve perform live, a spectator can count on
viewing a performance not often seen from a drummer.
In 2004, he released his first DVD entitled Over The
Barrel. With Steve’s unorthodox stick flips and
twirls, the DVD was an immediate success! The DVD
showcased Steve’s talent with a tremendous flair and
flamboyancy from behind the kit, and sold over 1000 units,
in the first 3 months.
The
showdrummer had learned at a very young age, that most
people hear with their eyes…and was not
too proud to use it to his advantage.
With
his new DVD complete, Steve began shopping for
endorsements. 2004 was a huge success for the drummer,
gaining several endorsements along the way, with Pro-Mark
being one of the largest. After all the years of struggle
and hardships, Steve would finally have a drumstick with
his name on it. A far cry from washing dishes and sleeping
on the floor...
In
February of 2005, Steve was featured in DRUM! Magazine.
After viewing Steve's DVD Over The Barrel, Waldo
the Squid was quoted as saying that Steve was
"...twisting, twirling, stick flipping, and flailing
like a Vegas version of Tommy Lee." The childhood
dream was slowly coming together, as Steve had dreamed of
one day being featured in such a magazine.
In
March of 2006, Steve gained an endorsement from Attack
Drumheads. He had been contacted from various companies
before, but did not want to endorse a company that he did
not fully believe in. Steve, had played these drumheads
for years prior to his endorsement, so he was thrilled to
except. In August of 2006, Steve became a Ludwig Endorser.
It was Steve’s dream to find a company that was as
anxious to push him, as he was to push their
products. He found that and more, with Ludwig
leading man, Todd Trent.
Steve’s
past performances range from the smallest club circuit
tours to a headlining show in front of 22,000 people. He
has performed in hard core punk clubs as well as casinos
in Las Vegas. In addition, he has been on the same bill
with a wide variety of performers – from Yngwie
Malmsteen and Motley Crue to Toby Keith and George Jones.
He has also won numerous drumming awards, held his own
drum clinics, written drum articles, and given private
instruction.
Steve
has made a lifetime commitment to his drumming. He has
resisted the options of marriage and family, along with
all the distractions they can bring. Steve Moore is a
seasoned player to whom playing is his livelihood and not
merely a hobby or weekend diversion. His track record of
achievements, along with his positive attitude and
unrelenting desire for success, come together to offer an
incredible asset to anyone searching for a studio or
touring drummer. |
